Shade 10 Hair Salon Update
From ShadeCamp
Shade Professional and Standard Editions include the Hair Salon plug-in. With Hair Salon, it is possible to create hair, fur and other effects based on a system of guide hairs.
Because Hair Salon was extensively revised for Shade 10, the documentation has been revised completely to account for the few features.
Creating Hair
Hair Salon is an easy way to generate hair or fur that conforms to native Shade objects. A head or patch of hair is generated by creating Guide Hair. Guide Hair is exactly what it sounds like - special, individual hairs that tell Shade how to generate multitudes of hairs based around information associated with the guide hair.
Creating Guide Hairs is the first step in the process of designing and styling hair. Guide hairs can be added and edited in the Hair Settings window.
Opening the Hair Settings Window
1. Using the Create tool create a sphere or other simple object.
2. With the sphere selected, choose Create > Hair Salon > Generate Hair. The Hair Settings window opens, allowing you to begin creating guide hairs.
Generating Guide Hairs
1. In the Hair Settings window, click the Grow button.
In the Hair Length textbox enter a value (in millimeters) for the length of hair you wish to grow.
2. In the Hair Settings preview window, click and drag in the area on the object you wish to populate with hair. Guide hairs are created where you clicked and dragged the cursor.
Note: If the object has polygon faces flipped inside out, the polygon will appear black in the preview pane and the guide hairs will be generated on the inside of the object.
Clipping Guide Hairs
1. Here we will remove some guide hairs. First choose the Rotate tool.
Click and drag in the preview window so that you are viewing the hair from the side.
2. Click the Clippers tool.
In the preview pane, click and drag across the guide hairs to thin them out.
Cutting Guide Hairs
1. Click the Cut button.
2. Click and drag across the guide hairs to chop them off. All guide hairs that the drag across, regardless of the distance in the preview window, will be clipped to the length.
Settings for the Cut tool can be modified in the Cut group in the lower right corner of the Hair Settings window. For more information on the tool settings, see “Cut Tool Settings.“
If not all the guide hairs are cut cleanly, you can use the Rotate tool to rotate the view and then cut again.
Matching the Length of Guide Hairs
1. Click the Match Length button.
2. Click and drag across the guide hairs as shown below to make all the guide hairs the same length.
Settings for the Match Length tool can be modified in the Match Length group in the lower right corner of the Hair Settings window. For more information on the tool settings, see “Match Length Tool Settings.“ If not all the guide hairs are made an even length, you can use the Rotate tool to rotate the view and then use the Match Length tool again.
Lengthening Guide Hairs
1. Click the Lengthen button.
2. Click and drag from the object outward in the direction you wish to lengthen the hair.
You will probably need to repeat this click and drag operation several times for longer lengths. Settings for the Lengthen tool can be modified in the Lengthen group in the lower right corner of the Hair Settings window. For more information on the tool settings, see “Lengthen Tool Settings.“
If not all the guide hairs are lengthened to your liking, try rotating the preview using the Rotate tool and using the Lengthen tool again.
Curling Guide Hairs
1. Click the Curl tool.
2. Click and drag in a back and forth motion perpendicular to the guide hairs.
Settings for the Curl tool can be modified in the Curl group in the lower right corner of the Hair Settings window. For more information on the tool settings, see “Curl Tool Setttings.“
If not all the guide hairs have enough curl, try rotating the preview using the Rotate tool and using the Curl tool again.
Arranging Guide Hairs
1. Click the Arrange / Blowdry tool.
2. Click and drag over the guide hairs in the direction you wish to arrange them.
You will probably need to repeat this click and drag operation several times in order to arrange the hair to your liking.
Settings for the Arrange tool can be modified in the Arrange group in the lower right corner of the Hair Settings window. For more information on the tool settings, see “Arrange Tool Settings.“
If not all guide hairs are arranged to your liking, try rotating the preview using the Rotate view and using the Arrange tool again.
Generating Guide Hairs
After you have finished arranging the guide hairs, click OK in the Hair Settings window to create the guide hairs in the Figure window.
A Hair part is created in the Browser which contains all the guide hair objects, and the guide hairs appears in the Figure window. Render the scene to see what the hair actually looks like.
To modify the guide hairs, select the guide hairs you wish to modify, then from the Custom Tool, select Select Hair Attributes...
Hair Texture Settings
Applying Texture to Hair
1. With the Hair part selected, choose Hair Texture Settings from the Custom tool. The Hair Texture Settings dialog appears.
2. Here we will change the Density to 0.2.
Next, click somewhere in the middle of the gradation bar on the left side of the dialog to create a new arrow marker.
With this new arrow marker selected, click on the color box below to change the color. Here we will choose a brown.
3. Click OK to close the dialog and apply the settings.
Now open the Surface window. The texture you just specified should be applied to the hair.
The surface attributes are also saved as images and a Master Surface.
Render the scene to view your results.
Note: If the hair does not render correctly using Ray Tracing or Path Tracing rendering methods, try setting the Ray cast level to 5 or greater in the Misc. tab of the Rendering Settings. For more information on the Ray cast level, see “ “ In the User Guide.
To modify a hair texture choose Hair Texture Settings from the Custom tool or from the mapping Info menu in the Surface window.
Applying Texture to Individual Guide Hairs
Multiple textures can be applied to different guide hairs.
1. With the Hair part selected, choose Hair Salon > Generate Hair Texture from the Create tool. Adjust the settings to your liking and click OK to create the texture.
2. Repeat the above steps to create a second texture.
3. Open the Hair Settings window by choosing Hair Settings from the Custom tool. Select the Paintbrush tool at the top left of the window.
4. At the bottom of the Color Settings group is a list of the textures you have created for this hair part. First select the one you wish to use, then click the polygons in the preview window to apply the selected texture to those guide hairs.
Creating a Polygon Mesh from Guide Hairs
Guide hairs can be edited like any other polygon mesh if you first convert them to a polygon mesh. With the hair part selected in the Browser, choose Hair Salon > Create Hair from the Create tool.
To make fine adjustments to the hair it is usually best to style the guide hairs as close as possible to the desired result and then convert them to polygon meshes and edit the individual polygons.
Note: If you wish to use render hair using ShadeGrid, first convert the guide hairs to polygon meshes for optimal results.
Creating Fur
Hair Salon is no longer limited to creating human-like hair: now you can create fur on surfaces. Fur has all the qualities and parameters as hair, in addition to some additional parameters.
You can get started adding fur by going to Hair Settings and selecting the Fur button.
Setting Fur Root Color
1. Go to Hair Settings and select the Fur button.
2. From the Fur Operations Tab, select Root Color.
3. The Root Color options appear. You will be setting the root color by painting on the surface of the object. Set a Pen size. Using the color picker, select any color other than black.
4. Make sure the Root Color Pen is selected, and paint over the surface area. Add Guide Hair or other modifications.
5. Click OK, then render.
Guide Hair based fur appears with the Root Color you specified.
Setting the Color and Thickness of Fur
1. Go to Fur Operations Tab, and select the Hair Color and Thickness button.
2. The Hair Color and Thickness Settings appear. Select the left marker, then select the Color option to set the root color. Select the right marker and then the Color option to set the hair tip color. Select the width in millimeters for both the hair root and hair tip.
Click the Apply button to apply the color and thickness settings. If you do not click the Apply button, then the settings will not be applied to the object.
3. Click OK to generate hair using the settings.
The changes are only applied to areas where the Root Color Pen was applied.
Setting the Length of Fur
1. Go to Fur Operations Tab, and select the Length of Hair button.
2. The Length of Hair Settings appear. The default length is .05.
3. Adjust the Pen Size and Length, then draw on the surface of the object. You can change the Pen Size and Length and apply different settings to different areas of the surface.
4. Click OK. Shade creates guide hairs based on the Length areas.
Only the areas where you marked with the Pen Tool have hairs grown to the length specified.
Setting the Density of Fur
1. Go to Fur Operations Tab, and select the Hair Density button.
2. The Hair Density Settings appear. The default density is .05.
3. Adjust the Pen Size and Density, then draw on the surface of the object. You can change the Pen Size and Density and apply different settings to different areas of the surface.
4. Click OK. Shade creates guide hairs based on the areas of hair density you demarked.
Only the areas where you marked with the Pen Tool have hairs grown to the density specified.
Transforming Hair
Using Hair Salon Masks
Hair Salon includes an easy to use masking tool that lets you designate areas that are free from Guide Hair. This feature is available in Shade 10 and later.
1. Go to the Selection options and select the Mask button.
2. The Mask options appear. You will be painting on an area to designate areas where hair cannot be placed. Set the Pen size and draw on the surface of the object.
3. At any time, use the Grow Hair Tool or the Grow All button to generate hair on the active surface.
When you generate hair or fur, no hair is generated on the masked area. You can use the Erase Tool to erase areas you previously designated as a masked area.
Collision Detection for Hair Salon
This option automatically a naturally calculations the impact of intersecting Guide Hair as it is transformed with Hair Salon’s transformation tools, allowing hair to be styled in a more naturalistic fashion.
This feature is available in Shade 10 Professional and later.
1. Select Hair or Fur settings and create hair guides according to your liking. Select All, then from the Settings Tab, click the Detect Collision button.
2. The Detect Collision Settings appear. Select the Collision with Object option and the Collision Distance.
3. Apply transformations using the hair transformation tools, such as the Match Length Tool or Blow Dry Tool.
Guide Hairs that intersect with each other will have the intersection apply the interaction to the hair it touches.
Mirroring Hair for Hair Salon
Mirroring Hair lets you quickly and easily generate hair on an opposing region of an object, based on the hair that is already available on one side of the object.
This feature is available in Shade 10 and later.
1. Select Hair or Fur settings and create hair guides according to your liking. From the Edit Tab, select the Mirroring Tool. The Mirroring Settings appear. Select the Symmetrical Guide option, then click Display Axis Specification.
2. Within the Hair Settings window, drag down to create a mirroring axis. <insert picture>
3. The hair that appears on one side of the axis will be mirrored onto the other side of the axis.
Now you can apply transformations on the hair on one side, and have it mirrored on the mirrored hair. For example, apply the Blow Dry tool to the hair.
When you are ready to break the mirroring relationship between the two sides, click Symmetrical Guide Substantiation; after you click this button, the two sides are no longer joined and can be treated as independent regions of hair.
Gravity for Hair Salon
Gravity for Hair Salon allows you to apply natural world physics to Guide Hair, allowing you to make hair lay or fall naturally.
This feature is available in Shade 10 Professional and later.
1. In Hair Salon, from the Settings Tab, click the Gravity Tool.
2. The Gravity Settings appear. Select the Use Gravity Option and apply any transformational changes from the available options.
3. Click the Apply button. Gravity applies to the entire selection. You can apply gravity multiple times until the hair hangs downward completely.
Gravity for Hair Salon is a very powerful feature as it can be used in conjunction with animation, allowing you to create realistic animations of hair movement.
Animating Gravity and Collision with Hair Salon
1. Locate the example file / Documentation / Plugin Manual / PM_HairSalon01.shd and open it in Shade. The exact location may vary between operating system platforms.
Some transformations have already been applied to this example scene.
2. Go to menu View > Motion to open the Motion window. Open the Motion menu to display the Motion options. Set the Total Frames to 60.
3. From the Motion options, click Create Animation, and save the animation file. Refer to Chapter 19 Rendering Animations for more information.
Hair Salon animation also allows joint based animation and path based animation.

About Surface Attributes of the Hair Part
The attributes of the generated hair and the hair texture images are stored in the surface attributes of the Hair part.
This information is used when rendering or when creating a polygon mesh from guide hairs, except that the Transparency is always set to 1.0 and the Backlight to 0.5.
A mapping layer is added to the surface attributes when a new hair texture is created.
At this time the attributes are stored in the order of “Image/Diffuse”, “Image/Transparency”, “Image/ Bump”. These three values together express the hair texture. By storing the values in this order, images not automatically created by Hair Salon can be used as hair textures. |
