iClone Exporter(Windows only)
iClone Exporter is a plug-in which exports models created with Shade as iClone .iAvatar figures. Exported figures are registered in the Character Custom tab of the content manager in iClone.
Requires iClone 5 or higher and Reallusion 3DXchange4 or higher are required in order to use iClone exporter. iClone and iClone inter-application capabilities are only available on Windows.
Note: The iClone exporter is a first release that allows you to use the dynamic data link feature of Reallusion iClone version 5. Additional improvements are planned for future versions of Shade.
iClone export Dialog Box
To access this dialog box, from the File Menu, select Export…, then iClone…. You can set up the type and version options of the file you are going to export.
You can set up file type, encoding and intervals of the coordinate system that are going to be exported. iClone exporter exports optimized data for iClone. There are items that cannot be changed because each setting of「iClone export」dialogue box is optimized in advance.
iClone Export Settings Group
Character name Text Box
Sets the name of the figure as it will appear in the exported model.
Coordinate Options Group
Up Vector Pop up Menu
Up Vector specifies the world coordinates orientation of the exported model. You can select eitherY-UP or Z-UP. Some applications, by default, support one or the other.
Y-UP is used as a standard in Shade and Autodesk Maya. Z-UP is used by default in Autodesk 3D Studio MAX and iClone(3DXchange).
Scale Text box, Slider
This specifies the ratio of size when exporting a figure.
Output Format Group
Type Pop up Menu
Select to output as Text or Binary for the iClone format object.
Version Pop up Menu
This selects FBX specification version. Select a version based on the destination application.
Password Text Box
Enter an (optional) password for the FBX file. Note: Password is only available in Binary FBX files.
Encode Pop up Menu
This option allows you to save figure object names in either UTF 8 or ShiftJIS format. Note: ShiftJIS format is only applicable to Japanese names. UTF-8 is the default format and can handle all languages.
Select it to match the application you are going to use since some applications will not accept a different encoding.
Misc. Options Group
Adjust Skin Weight Values Check Box
When selected, all skin values are automatically converted and adjusted based on other target parameters. If not selected, it is exported based solely on information from the Skin Window. Usually you should select this option.
iClone Exporter Specifications
Figures can be exported either as single or multiple meshes.
| Shade | iClone | Notes |
| Closed line | Exports all figures that are exported as one or multiple mesh | When closed line objects are not a part of the same surface, they are divided into triangles.
This is not compatible with the Hole line attribute. |
| Revolved line | ||
| Extruded line | The Closed line object check box and the Begin / End text boxes for rotation angles in the Closed line Object Info dialog box are supported. | |
| Disk | ||
| Revolved disk | The Revolved disk object check box and the Begin / End text boxes for rotation angles in the Revolved disk Object Info dialog box are supported. | |
| Extruded disk | ||
| Sphere | ||
| Curved surface | ||
| Polygon mesh | Support rounded corners of polygon mesh objects | |
| Meta mesh | ||
| Linked object |
Supported Material Options
- Only image maps can be exported
- Supports multiple mapping layers (Diffuse, Bump)
- Supports multiple UV layers
- Supports Face Groups
- Supports only the Wrap option under Projection Mapping
When you apply trim on material in image mapping, adjust the Diffuse value of the image so that is is less than 1.0. When the Diffuse value is equal to 1.0, trimming will not be supported in the exported FBX file.
Supported Joints
| Shade Figures | iClone | Remarks |
| Rotation joint | Part | |
| Translation joint | ||
| Scale joint | ||
| Uni-scale joint | ||
| Ball joint | Skeleton |
Supported Camera Features
Supports export of the Meta camera and other camera objects.
Camera animation is not supported.
Supported Light Features
Supports object light (point light, spot light, directional light) and distant light. Area light and linear light are not supported. Distant lights are converted to directional lights where starting point is remotely-positioned.
Lights animation is not supported.
Notes on iClone Exports
Only non standard character of iClone character can be exported. The iClone exporter exports a non-standard/native though compatible iClone character
iClone will present a warning dialog box if a character is greater than 30,000 polygons. This is based on a limitation from DirectX. iClone can work with characters greater than 30,000 polygons, however the larger the character, the more performance issues may occur.
If subdivision surfaces are applied to polygon mesh objects, the joint values in the Skin Window may not be replicated correctly.
