Stereo Rendering
Stereo Rendering Overview
The Stereo Rendering function creates stereo images for stereogram or 3D displays.
The difference in view between the left and right eyes is converted to camera information and the scene is rendered.
Using Stereo Rendering
1. Choose Stereo Rendering… from the Plugins menu. The Stereo Rendering Setting dialog box appears.
For details on each item, refer to the Stereo Rendering Reference below.
2. Click the OK button without making any changes. The images for the left and right eyes are rendered and arranged side by side.

Basics Tab
Rendering Pull-down Menu
Choose Snap or Animation for the output type.
Snap
After rendering, an image will be produced in the Image window. To save the output image, click the Save… button in the Image window.
Animation
After rendering, a video file is produced.
Image Type Pull-down Menu
You can choose Side by Side, Crosseye, or 3D LC Display for the method used to combine the right and left images.
Side by Side
Crosseye
3D LC Display
The left and right images are interlaced and the rendered image is ready for use on a 3D Liquid Crystal display using a special parallax barrier.
Output Mode Pull-down Menu
Stereogram
The images for the left and right eyes are rendered, and then combined.
Left eye only
Only the image for the left eye is rendered.
Right eye only
Only the image for the right eye is rendered.
Adjustments tab
Depth Off Screen
This parameter adjusts the depth of image displayed in a stereoscopic view.
The optimum depth varies depending on the display size and individual preference. Use these parameters to adjust the depth when the parallax is too large, or to see more stereoscopic effect.
Front Text Box
Specifies the maximum distance (mm) of “pop out” in front of the display.
Back Text Box
Specifies the maximum distance (mm) of “draw back” behind the display.
Viewer
Viewing Distance Text Box
Specifies the distance between the display and the viewer’s eyes.
Eye Separation Text Box
Specifies the distance between the left and right eyes. The standard value is 62 mm.
Advance Tab
Scene Depth
In the scene to be rendered, you can specify the distances from the camera to the closest object, farthest object, and the display (ZDP: Zero Disparity Plane). The values you can enter are limited as: Front >= ZDP >= Back.
Depth Mode Pull-down Menu Automatic Depth
The Front, ZDP, and Back values are automatically measured. The values in the text boxes will be ignored.
Automatic ZDP
Select this option to manually set the Front and Back values. The ZDP text box will be ignored, and the value used will be automatically measured. User Defined Depth
Select this option to manually set all values for Front, ZDP, and Back. The values specified in the Depth off screen text boxes will be ignored.
Front Text Box
Specifies the distance (mm) from the camera to the closest object.
ZDP Text Box
You can specify the distance (mm) to the objects you want to appear at the surface of the display. Any object located before this point looks as if it is popping out from the display, while any object located beyond this point looks as if it is behind the display surface.
Back Text Box
Specifies the distance (mm) from the camera to the farthest object.
Camera Separation
Specifies the distance between the cameras for the left and right eyes in the scene to be rendered.
Separation Mode Pull-down Menu
Automatic
Sets the distance between the cameras automatically. The text box will be ignored.
User defined
Use this option to manually set the distance between cameras. The values specified in the Viewing distance and Eye separation settings are ignored.
Separation Text Box
Specifies the distance (mm) between cameras for the left and right eyes.
Get Scene Depth Before Show Dialog Check Box
Before the Stereo Rendering setting dialog box is displayed, the scene depth is measured and its result is used as a default value for each text box of the Advance tab. You can use this option as a guide to specify the settings.
Notes on and Application of Stereo Rendering
About the Rendering Options and Animation Settings
Stereo Rendering performs rendering with the preset values. All rendering and animation settings must be specified in advance.
Speeding Up Animation Rendering When There is No Change in Scene Depth
In animation rendering, the scene depth is measured for each frame. This may take some time when rendering a scene containing many objects. If the scene has no change in scene depth due to objects moving in and out of frame, set the Depth mode pull-down menu to Automatic ZDP and enter values for the scene depth (Front and Back), to reduce the rendering time.
In this case, if you turn on the Get scene depth before show dialog check box, the scene depth values will be automatically loaded. You can use these values as a reference for making the depth settings.
About Still Images and Animations Produced with the 3D LC Display Option
With the 3D LC Display option set in the Image Type pull-down menu, the pixels are blended one by one.
Thus, when the image is saved using a lossy compression format (JPEG, etc.), stereo rendering will not work.
When creating an animation using AVI format, choose Total frames (uncompressed) from the Compression Program pull-down menu in the Video Compression dialog box when rendering.
When creating an animation using QuickTime format, choose None from the pull-down menu specifying the compression type in the Compression setting dialog box.
About Animation for a Scene with a Single Object
When Scene depth is automatically measured, the depth will be calculated for each frame. Therefore, in an animation with a single object moving back and forth, stereographic motions cannot be expressed.
To create such an animation, locate invisible objects in front of and behind the area in which the object moves, or set the Scene depth values manually, which allows you to express stereographic motions.
About Particle and Blur Effectors
Animation using the Particle and Blur Effectors is not supported. |
